Speak The Truth To Find Your Voice

December 11, 2010

I’m starting a journey to exercise what I am learning by participating in the Greater Boston Chamber’s Women’s Leadership Program with Simmons College. The 3 key things we have learned so far have been strategically building your network is imperative to your career growth; you need to find formal and informal mentors; and your personal brand is just as important as the brand you work for.

My boss feels that I have tremendous potential, and yet a diamond in the rough. Apparently in need of a healthy dose of sandpaper according to him. I don’t necessarily think I’m that rough, although I will say I need refinement and honest direction from people that can actually contribute skills and experience that suits where I want to take my career.

My goal, to meet with 5 local digital leaders to get their perspective on the industry and what they see as the future opportunities. And, get advice on navigating my way through the most challenging professional experience thus far.

I had the privilege of sitting down with Mike Triano recently. He’s a principal at Holland-Mark with an incredibly impressive background. He has been making the rounds on the talking circuit, and that is how I found him.  Our conversation held tremendous value for me professionally, and I appreciated his time, humor, experiences, and insight.

At the end of our conversation when I said I was trying to find my voice so that I could blog more consistently to develop my personal brand. He said, “speak the truth”. So here I go. I’ll be speaking the truth throughout this journey.
